August 11, 2023 2023-08-29 0:20Nemutenga: The Assamese Lemon
Nemutenga, the indigenous lemon of Assam, captivates both taste buds and culture. This citrus gem, with its distinct aroma and flavor, holds a treasure trove of health benefits.
Health Benefits:
Rich in Vitamin C, nemutenga strengthens the immune system, aiding in the fight against infections. Its potent antioxidants help combat free radicals, promoting radiant skin and overall well-being. The fruit’s alkaline nature supports digestion and detoxification, enhancing gut health. Consumed traditionally as a remedy for colds and flu, nemutenga proves its medicinal worth.
At solitude farm, nemutenga, has been planted everywhere as it is very easy to propagate through suckers that come up from the main roots. We use it for pickles, drinks and even use the leaves in our green papaya soup. This citrus is generous in its production and huge in size, I have nicknamed it the “hand grenade lemon,” a bomb of tangy vitamin C delight.
Beyond its nutritional prowess, nemutenga occupies a special place in Assamese culture. From culinary delights like pickles and chutneys to refreshing beverages, it features prominently in regional cuisine. Local festivals and gatherings often celebrate nemutenga through traditional dishes and rituals, fostering a sense of community and heritage.
