HISTORY OF THE CAFE

In 2006 Krishna and Deepa started Solitude Farm café when a workshop being held at the farm requested lunch. Deepa, Krishna’s wife, cooked the type of food they normally cooked with fresh produce from the farm. The lunch was highly appreciated and they came to see the value and demand for fresh healthy food.

The vision of a vegan cafe using only local foods pushed Deepa to remember all the traditional recipes she had grown up

They started to explore local weeds and uses of plants such as palm fruit, green papaya, chicken spinach and turkey berry. They saw that the cafe brought financial stability without creating an ecological cost. The medicinal and nutritional values of these amazing super foods has created an inspired menu with green smoothies, millet dosa, the much appreciated farm salad “ buddha bowl” flower coolers and more. Many of the foods served grow in the fields without any effort and authentically reflect the philosophy of Masanobu Fukuoka’s “Do Nothing Farming”

Education and music events subsequently emerged at the cafe, creating a rich and dynamic community engagement. Schools and groups started to visit and after giving farm tours over many years, the media started to take note.

With the understanding that food and music are an adhesive in a society, Lively up Your Earth
Eco-Music Festival was born; a day long celebration of local foods showcasing 15 bands, workshops, art, crafts, theatre, community celebration. After LUYE and many other concerts, Solitude Farm Cafe has become known for great live music as much as it is for great food. The message of cultural redemption through honoring the gifts of Mother Nature, much like a plant growing from seed, has come to fruition with Solitude’s unique “ farm to plate” experience and the learning is still going on!
