Hibiscus sabdariffa
Rosella is a semi-wild growing plant with diverse uses. One simple way to use it is to make a juice or a tea with the fruit.
The fruits are removed from the plant by cutting them, or twisting and pulling them off. Collect a handful or two and wash them. Next remove the outer red fruity part (called calyces or sepals) by cutting them from the bottom of the pod where they are attached. Then put a handful of them into boiling water. Boil the calyces until they become translucent, and the water turns red. Add sweetener if needed; and enjoy either hot or cold.
This juice is full of vitamin C – which boosts the immune system, is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, and an excellent tonic to counter cough, colds, and fever. It is said to help with weight loss, and to also be calming for the nervous system due to its content of antidepressant flavonoids which help reduce anxiety. Rosella juice also helps reduce menstrual cramps and pain by restoring hormonal balance, and it has anti-cancer properties.
A cool, refreshing drink, with a slightly tart flavour (akin to cranberry juice) and multiple health benefits. Drinking Rosella juice regularly just makes total sense!!
