Traditionally Tamil culture followed a Lunar calendar. The month of May corresponds to the Tamil month of Chitirai. It is in this season that we can harvest Ragi. Understanding the seasonal variations, the changes in weather patterns when to plant and harvest is obviously integral to preserving crop diversity and, thus, a healthy society that has access to good food throughout the season. In many cases, this is knowledge that has to be rediscovered.
