Atlantia Monophyll – Wild Lemon

We see plants in such an anthropocentric way. Depending on its value to me is how much it is known; often, if it has no obvious economic value, it gets forgotten.

The amazing Atlantia Monophylla, or the wild lemon, is known to me as many years ago I helped harvest seeds from wild pockets of hills where the traditional TDEF Or Tropical Dry Ever Green scrub jungle still flourishes. I remember being told that we could make pickles from the fruits, the remnants of old village knowledge. Now, we are using the tree as a fence plant as it is full of tough thorns and planted densely is a great fencing tree. Because of this, I started to research it and discovered how many incredible values it has. Like so many plants, all its parts are valued. The leaves are antiseptic, the fruits help with digestion, the flowers are beautifully fragrant and are used in religious ceremonies, and even the bark is used to alleviate fever. It makes so much sense that this richness of medicinal wealth is still there in such an ancient culture. One wonders how long this knowledge goes back. One thing is for sure if we don’t reach out and learn to value these special trees, they too will be forgotten. Embracing culture means so much; it means digging deep into a rich heritage that emerged from a relationship with the earth and its gifts.
