Turmeric is a very easy plant to grow in an urban setting, or on an apartment balcony. This amazing plant is a medicine, a condiment, a dye, a cosmetic ingredient, and used in ceremonies too!

Fill up old buckets, pots, tin cans,or even old vegetable crates with sandy soil mixed with compost, and when the monsoon is around the corner – June or July the rhizomes saved from the previous harvest are ready to plant. It’s interesting to observe that the turmeric rhizomes start to sprout in the store room at this time –

What is this, if not Mother Nature announcing, “hey, now is the time to plant me!”

Turmeric takes about 7 months to be ready for harvest. An indicator of the right time to do so is a slight browning and wilting of the leaves. As mentioned previously, if you have the space to plant Turmeric rhizomes in anything between a half to a whole dozen of such vegetable crates, for example, you would easily have enough of a yield to last you the entire year, and perhaps some left over to share with your friends even!

I think it’s important to realize that we can address some of our most basic needs and by doing so we improve our lives nutritionally, medicinally, ecologically and even culturally.Plant your own turmeric! This is something you can do!
