Jicama is also known as“yam bean,” “Mexican turnip,” and “Chinese potato.” The Spanish word “jicama” comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec) xicama. Jicama isn’t just a root; it’s a revelation. Nutritional dynamo? Check. Packed with fiber, vitamins, and minerals, it’s a crisp, low-calorie delight for your body. Culinary maestro? Absolutely. Whether sliced into salads, stir-fried or enjoyed as crunchy sticks, its versatility is unmatched. But there’s more – jicama boasts medicinal magic.
With antioxidants to bolster your immune system and anti-inflammatory properties, it’s a natural healer. Its prebiotic fiber promotes gut health, too.
In a permaculture system, it is an amazing ground cover, filling gaps between plants and suppressing evaporation with the shade of its leaves.
Note: Don’t eat the beans; they look delicious! They are toxic! The beans and flowers contain rotenone, a natural insecticide that is toxic to humans, especially in large doses. Only eat the root!
