Moong Dal

Moong dal is a vibrant legume and is an intrinsic part of Indian cuisine. Beyond its delightful taste and versatility in the kitchen, moong dal boasts a wealth of health benefits, earning its reputation as a valuable addition to any balanced diet.

Brimming with antioxidants, Moong dal is a potent shield against harmful free radicals, safeguarding our cells and reducing the risk of chronic illnesses. Moreover, its low glycemic index helps maintain steady blood sugar levels, rendering it a safe option for those with diabetes. Embracing moong dal can promote digestive health thanks to its ample fiber content, which aids in smoother digestion, alleviates constipation, and nurtures a healthy gut environment.

Nutritionally, moong dal stands as a true powerhouse. As a plant-based protein source, it supports tissue repair, muscle building, and overall growth, while its abundance of essential vitamins (like folate, thiamine, vitamin B6, and vitamin C) fortifies various bodily functions. Furthermore, this legume offers a treasure trove of essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and iron, which play pivotal roles in heart health, nerve function, and oxygen transport.

Incorporating moong dal into your diet is effortless due to its culinary versatility. Soak it overnight to make sprouts which are delicious in salads, or even grind it into dosa batter. A Sadhu friend of mine always roasts the dal first, and it gives off a delicious smell, then he boils it and makes curry.

Moong Dal should be a go-to for every kitchen! It is also a beautiful intercrop and rotation crop as it is very short in duration, lasting two and a half months from seed to harvest. It can be a pre-crop ground cover and even intercropped in between plants like brinjal etc. like this, you may not get much yield as usually the dal is grown in open fields, but it will fix nitrogen and create a ground cover. Definitely worth exploring!
