The Last Custodians of Cultural and Nutritional Identity- 1
Local ladies, Mothers, grandmothers, and farmers are the last custodians of our culture. They are the ones who still recognize the local weeds and know how to use them when to consume them, their benefits, and their diverse values.
Women are the backbone of this country, and this series of photos by photographer Catherine Leo represents the relationship between women and local food.
Sundakai:
This small, undervalued weed is making a comeback. It has numerous health benefits, such as controlling blood sugar levels and blood pressure prevents anemia, to name a few.
We add it to Sambar, make vegetable dishes and chutneys, and do absolutely nothing to grow it as it grows on its own. A volunteer crop! It is the wisdom of a Mother to feed this delightful food to her children!
